The importance of being a STEM teacher

As a teacher of science or mathematics, your child can dramatically shape future generations. Occupations in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are some of the fastest-growing in the nation, with 8.6 million STEM-related careers projected to be available by 2018, according to a study conducted by Georgetown University.

The high demand for STEM careers leads to an increasingly high demand for STEM educators, currently in short supply, particularly in South Carolina. Teachers of STEM:

  • Are a critical component to work force development in South Carolina.
  • Prepare the next generation of qualified, highly-trained workers to support various high technology industry sectors.
  • Contribute to South Carolina's competitiveness in attracting technology-based companies to invest in our state.
